2005 Athletes of the Year.2005 has been an outstanding season of high school track and field in the state of Wisconsin. There are two athletes who have risen clearly to the top. Madison Memorial senior Jenny Soceka and Green Bay Preble senior Steve Marcelle Because of their stellar seasons they have been named the 2005 wisconsintrackandfield.com High School Track and Field Athletes of the Year. Madison Memorial's Jenny Soceka has been a dominating force in the girls pole vault over te last few years. Soceka is the 2005 wisconsintrackandfield.com girls High School Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Soceka had a great season despite battling illness in the middle of the season. She was a triple state champion in La Crosse. Jenny was also nationally ranked in the pole vault and she competed well in several national competitions. In the pole vault, Jenny set the all-time best height at the TFA Indoor meet in Madison in early April. She also was the best high hurdler in the state this season. She led the girls honor roll with her 14.95 time. Soceka will compete at the University of Wisconsin next season. Male Athlete of the Year
Stu Voigt (Madison West ’66) who had a stellar collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin and a 11-year NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings held the all-time best mark and WIAA state record in the shot put until Green Bay Preble senior Steve Marcelle’s fantastic season. Marcelle broke Voigt’s all-time best throw three times this season. First, indoors at the TFA Indoor Championships in April, he threw 67-4. Second, at the WIAA state meet he bested Voigt’s 39 year old state record with a 67-6 throw. Then, at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina, Steve won the national title with his best throw all season at 68-0¼. Because of his incredible season Marcelle is the 2005 wisconsintrackandfield.com male athlete of the year. Marcelle will compete for Georgia Tech next season. |
