110th WIAA State Track and Field ChampionshipsDate: Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, 2005 Location: Harring/Veterans Stadium, La Crosse, Wisconsin Weather: Friday - Mostly cloudy for a majority of the day with temps from 70 to 75, windy hindering fast sprint times. Saturday - Temps started at 68 at 10:30 and moved to 73 at 5pm. There were early-morning showers prior to the meet starting but the precipitation held up for most of the day, except for a brief 5-minute drizzle around 2 p.m. The wind did impact the competition with 10-15 mph south and south west winds the entire day (into the face of the main straight-away). Attendance: Friday - 8,919 , Saturday - 8.324, total - 17,243
The 110th State Track and Field meet is in the history books. What history it was!! A new attendance record of 17,243 was set for the two-day event. Some of the highlights are noted below. For the boys, team titles were won by Milwaukee Vincent in D1, Osceola in D2 and Athens in D3. The girls team titles went to Waukesha West in D1, Lakeside Lutheran in D2 and Rosholt in D3. Three monstrous state records were broken which makes the 2005 Championships something extra special. The records were monstrous because of the athletes who previously held the records - Stu Voigt, holder of the state record in the shot put for almost 40-years and a 11-year NFL vet, Kenny Harrison, Olympic Champion and American Record holder in the triple jump and Chris Solinsky, arguably the best prep distance runner to ever grace the state of Wisconsin. Green Bay Preble's Steve Marcelle broke the WIAA state record in the shot put with his 67-6 win in the D1 competition on Friday. In an unbelievable atmosphere, Marcelle had a great series including throws of 67-0, 66-11, and 67-5¼. Marcelle's winning throw bests his previous Wisconsin all-time best throw of 67-4 set earlier this year at the TFA indoor and it breaks the 66-7½ mark set almost 40 years ago by Stu Voigt of Madison West. Only one other WIAA record was older than Voigt's. Madison Central's Larry Franklin's 1965 long jump mark of 25-0¾ continues as the oldest record in the state. On Saturday Marcelle added a second title by winning the D1 discus as well. Also on Friday, New London senior Chris Rombough broke Chris Solinsky's WIAA 3200 meter record while winning the D1 title in 8:57.73. This time is the 4th best in Wisconsin prep history.
On Saturday, a third WIAA state best was set by Bradley Tech sophomore Victor Reynolds. Reynolds topped 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist and American Record Holder (59-4¼) Kenny Harrison's 1983 mark with his 48-11 (second longest ever) win in the division 1 triple jump. Valders senior Sean Pruitt has the top discus throw in the nation this year (215-7) which is also the best all-time in Wisconsin. Pruitt dueled Broadhead-Juda's A.J. Curtis in division 2 coming out on top by just over two feet 185-8 to 183-5 on Friday. Curtis came back to defeat Pruitt in the shot put on Saturday with a monster toss of 63-11½ (8xWI). In the boys 3200 meter relay, 3 of the 4 fastest times ever were run. In division 1 Whitefish Bay at 7:49.45 and Arrowhead at 7:50.02 are now #2 and #3 all-time and in division 2 Grafton is #4 at 7:50.94.
For the girls, Madison Memorial senior Jenny Soceka, won three state titles even though she is battling illness (mononucleosis). She is the all-time best performer in the pole vault and she won the D1 pole vault with a height of 12-3. This is Soceka's second straight D1 title. Soceka's 13-0 vault at the TFA Indoor is the highest vault all time. Soceka came up a few inches short in her attempt to break the WIAA girls record of 12-6. Soceka also won the 100 meter high hurdles in the season's best time of 15.00 and was the lead-off leg on Madison Memorial's victories 800 meter relay team. State 400 meter record holder Joanne Schultz (Holmen junior) has been battling injury all season but she came through in La Crosse as she won the 400 meters for the third straight year and the 200 meters for the second straight.
