112th WIAA State Track and Field Championships

The 112th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Track and Field Championships and the 37th Girls Track and Field Championships were held Friday and Saturday, June 1-2.

Date: Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2, 2006

Location: Harring/Veterans Stadium, La Crosse, Wisconsin

Weather: Friday was mostly sunny for the morning D2/D3 session but rain started about 3pm and came down throughout the D1 afternoon and evening session. Saturday was mostly nice except for a brief shower. Friday's high was 77 (temps were cooler during the D1 session .. around 65) while Saturday's was 78.

Attendance: Friday - 9,387, Saturday - 7,877, total - 17,435
For the second year the meet was split into separate sessions on Friday, a Division 1 session in the afternon and a Division 2-3 session in the morning. The first-day attendance total was a record 9,384.

Team Titles: Boys team titles were won by Milwaukee Marshall in D1, Richland Center in D2 and Newman Catholic in D3. For the girls Hudson won D1, West Salem and Brown Deer (tie) in D2 and Shell Lake D3.

Two state records were set on Friday in the 3200 meter relay. Monroe broke the D1 record and all-time best mark set last season by Whitefish Bay while winning the D1 title in 7:42.91. Sheboygan Lutheran broke the D3 record with their 7:57.64 win. Several teams in D2 moved into the top-50 led by winner Chilton with a time of 7:52.39 (8th best ever). Another state record was set in the D3 pole vault by Daniel Drewek (Athens senior) at 15-1.

Paul Annear (Richland Center junior) won three D2 titles. He won the high jump (for the third straight season) with a great leap of 6-10. This leap is just under his PR and season best of 6-10¼ set indoors. Annear also won the long jump and triple jump.

Watertown junior Andrew Perkins won both the D1 800 and 1600 meter runs in very high quality times of 1:52.33 and 4:11.87. Perkins' 800 time is just off his PR of 1:51.80 set earlier this season. Second place finisher Aron Kehoe (Monroe senior) ran the 11th fastest 800 meter time ever in 1:52.99. Omro senior Patrick Plank set a D2 record in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles with the fastest time of the day and the season in 38.08 (11th best all-time). Milwaukee Marshall senior Zachary Sharkey-Ketner was close behind winning the D1 title in the 12th fastest ever in 38.10.

Other top boys performances include: Milwaukee Marshall senior Quentin Luttrell who defended his D1 100 meter title as well as winning the D1 200 meters. Brown Deer junior Justin Austin who won both D2 short sprints. Milwaukee Thomas More senior Nick Szczech who won both D2 long races. In D3 three boys brought home two golds each - Abbotsford senior Brian Lecheler in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Peter Bolgert - Sheboygan Lutheran senior won D3 800 and 1600, and Wausau Newman senior Dann Schneider who won the D3 triple jump and 400.

Top marks for the girls include Ashley Beutler (Belleville-New Glarus junior) who won the D2 1600 meter run in the 4th fastest time ever - 4:48.37 and the 3200 in 10:46.52.

Racine Case senior Akaila Cabell who ran 11.98 in the D1 100 meter dash prelims (7th fastest ever) won the D1 100 and 400 finals on Saturday. Milwaukee Riverside junior Sharay Hale ran the 5th fastest 200 meter time ever in the D1 prelims in 24.59. Dodgeland junior Megan Rennhack ran the 6th fastest 300 low hurdle time ever in the D3 prelims at 44.44 and she also won the D3 100 meter high hurdles. Hudson senior Sharyn Dahl ran the 5th fastest 300 meter low hurdle time ever while defending her D1 title in a time of 44.11. Florence soph Aileen Lemanski set a D3 record in long jump in a top-50 mark of 18-2¼.

East Troy junior Becca Buchholtz set a state record in the D2 high jump with a 5-9 leap (ties for 3rd highest jump ever) . as well as winning the D2 triple jump and taking second in the long jump. Jamie Dittmar (Wausau East junior) defended her D1 800 meter run title in 2:11.63. Just off the winning time of 2:11.35 she had last year. Only four other runners have gone faster than Jamie. One of them is named Suzy.

Wausau East ran the third fastest time ever while winning the D1 title in the 3200 meter relay at 9:18.86. Second place finisher Waukesha West ran 9:19.92 which is the fourth fastest all-time. Anna Johnson (Xavier senior) ran a top-20 time of 14.85 while winning the D2 100 meter high hurdles.

Other top girls included: Brown Deer junior Kaya Senaya won repeat D2 titles in the 100 and 200 meters and she was a member of the champion 4x100 meter relay team. Sheboygan Lutheran senior Stacey Thiel won the D3 1600 and 3200 meter runs, and Shell Lake senior Hannah Gronning, won the D3 shot put and discus - setting a D3 record in the discus.
